The choice every mithai brand has to make
Walk into any sweet shop in Chandigarh, Amritsar, or Ludhiana and you'll see both formats. The kappa rigid box sits on the gifting display — structured, heavy, gold-foiled — while the flexible folding carton handles the counter sale. Both are right. They serve different functions in the same shop.
But for a mithai manufacturer placing their first large packaging order, the choice between kappa and flexible can feel confusing. This guide makes it simple.
What is a kappa box?
A kappa rigid sweet box is built on a 3mm kappa board core — a dense, rigid fibreboard that gives the box its structure. The exterior is wrapped with a printed paper (SBS 250–300 GSM), which carries the design, foil, embossing, or lamination. The result is a box that has weight and substance in the hand.
Kappa boxes do not self-assemble from a flat sheet. They arrive constructed and ready to fill. This means:
- Higher per-unit cost (more materials, more labour, more production steps)
- Higher perceived value (customers pay for this)
- No assembly at point of sale
- More storage space (boxes can't be flattened for storage)
Kappa is the right choice when the box is part of the gift. Wedding favours, Diwali hampers, premium mithai brands, corporate gifting — in every case where the box will be presented rather than just used, kappa delivers.
What is a flexible sweet box (folding carton)?
A flexible sweet box — also called a folding carton or folding sweet box — is made from SBS 300 GSM paperboard, printed, laminated, die-cut, and delivered flat. The sweet shop staff assembles it at point of sale by folding along the creases.
Flexible cartons:
- Cost 30–50% less than kappa at equivalent order quantities
- Pack flat — you can store 10x the volume in the same space
- Print beautifully in 4-colour offset with matte or gloss lamination
- Are the standard format for daily high-volume mithai sales
The trade-off is tactile. A 300 GSM folding carton flexes slightly when you push on the side. It doesn't feel as substantial as a kappa box. For daily peda, barfi, and namkeen sales where the customer is not paying a premium for packaging, this is the correct trade-off. No one expects a ₹150 quarter-kg of ladoo to arrive in a rigid luxury box.
Cost comparison at typical order quantities
At 5,000 units (standard MOQ at most manufacturers), the difference in cost between kappa and flexible for a standard 500g sweet box is approximately:
- Flexible folding carton: competitive per-unit pricing at scale
- Kappa rigid box: typically 40–60% higher per unit than flexible
The cost differential narrows when you add premium finishes to the flexible carton (velvet touch lamination, spot UV, foil). A heavily finished flexible carton approaches the feel of a kappa box while remaining lighter and easier to store.
At 1,000 units (available for kappa from some manufacturers), the per-unit cost of kappa is higher still — but for a premium gifting product where your retail price is ₹800–₹2,000 per box, the packaging cost is a small fraction of the sale value.
Finishes: what each format supports
Kappa rigid boxes:
- Gold and silver hot foil stamping
- Blind embossing and debossing
- Velvet touch lamination (luxurious tactile feel)
- Gloss and matte lamination
- Spot UV
- Ribbon pulls and magnetic closures (on premium variants)
Flexible folding cartons:
- Full 4-colour offset printing
- Gloss lamination
- Matte lamination
- Spot UV (adds significant premium feel)
- Hot foil stamping (possible but adds tooling cost)
For Diwali gifting-grade products, kappa with gold foil stamping and velvet touch is the market expectation. A flexible carton with velvet touch and spot UV can approximate this at lower cost, and some brands use this approach for their mid-range gifting SKUs.
When to use both in the same product range
Most mid-to-large mithai brands in North India use both formats strategically:
Flexible folding cartons for:
- Daily counter sales (peda, barfi, ladoo, namkeen by weight)
- Standard gift sizes (250g, 500g, 1kg) in the everyday range
- Institutional/corporate orders where quantity matters more than presentation
- E-commerce orders where packaging-within-packaging is the norm
Kappa rigid boxes for:
- Premium gifting SKUs (750g to 2kg)
- Seasonal lines (Diwali, weddings, Rakshabandhan, Lohri)
- Corporate gifting with custom branding
- Hampers and multi-product gift sets
You can run both in the same visual design language — matching colour palette, same typography, complementary finishes — so your brand is coherent across both formats.
Planning your Diwali order: the timeline that protects you
Diwali is the single highest-demand moment for sweet box packaging in India. The supply chain tightens from August onwards.
Ideal timeline:
- By end of July: finalise your design, confirm quantities, submit artwork
- By mid-August: approve the production sample
- By September: take first delivery, begin selling from October onwards
- October run-up: sell through your stock; monitor whether you need a top-up order
A manufacturer who tells you they can deliver 50,000 kappa boxes in the last week of September is either carrying excess stock (unlikely) or overpromising. Secure your slot early.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get kappa and flexible boxes printed with the same brand design?
Yes, and we recommend it. Running a consistent visual identity across both formats means your shop's display and gifting range feel like they belong together. The dieline and printing setup are separate, but the artwork files can share the same design system.
What is the minimum order for kappa sweet boxes?
Our MOQ for kappa rigid sweet boxes is 5,000 units. For initial sampling and design approval, speak to us about pre-production samples.
Are sweet boxes food-grade?
All materials — board, inks, and laminates — must be food-grade compliant for any packaging that will contact or enclose food. Always verify this with your supplier. We use food-grade certified materials across all our sweet box production.
Can you do custom shapes for kappa boxes — round, hexagonal, etc.?
Yes. Custom die shapes are available for kappa boxes — rounds, hexagonals, and irregular footprints for gift sets. Custom shapes require a tooling charge and are subject to minimum quantities.
Which format is better for mithai being shipped by courier?
For courier shipment, flexible folding cartons inside a corrugated outer box typically perform better than kappa boxes — they're lighter, the corrugated outer provides the real protection, and they're less likely to dent in transit. Kappa boxes can dent at the corners when subjected to courier handling. If courier durability is a concern, use flexible cartons with a well-designed corrugated outer.
